"The coach@school - bookcase program (2017-ongoing) is the first multilingual reading promotion program that connects the educational venues of school/nursery and home. It uses multilingual books to promote the home language or language of origin to facilitate learning German. Multilingual and intercultural books support the children in their learning development and strengthen their personality. Families are given the opportunity to read with their children in their native language, as this improves their educational opportunities and social integration.
The main objectives are:
- Strengthening literacy skills and promoting multilingualism;
- Transmit the values of a tolerant society, address children's emotions and promote independent and creative engagement with book content;
- Strengthening parent participation and promoting educational partnerships;
- Networking and cooperation.
Two suitcases are available for each participating school class, including twelve multilingual, intercultural and inclusive children's books in twelve languages, a reading journal for children and multilingual reading instructions for parents. The books were selected on the basis of scientific findings from anti-discrimination research.
The project is currently being implemented in Hamburg and Frankfurt, Hesse (extension in progress). It is financed by foundations, NGOs, companies, the Bildungslotterie (education lottery), the Hamburg Parliament and citizens."
