Curing the Limbo Project, from the city of Athens

Description

The Municipality of Athens, in collaboration with the Kapodistrian University of Athens (UoA), the Catholic Relief Services (CRS), the International Rescue Committee (IRC), and the Development and Tourism Promotion Company of the Municipality of Athens (EATA) co-created and ran the pilot program "Curing the Limbo" (2018-2021). The program was based on the methodology of action research which had a dual function: On the one hand, the activation of the refugee potential in Greek society and on the other hand, the creation of a multifaceted background that would only be beneficial for the refugees. In addition, it developed project-based learning that aimed to facilitate the connection of language courses with activities in Athens and contained the teaching of two languages, Greek and English. The language was used as a tool of learning. The entire learning process was focused on the "how" and not on the "what" that will be taught. The participants were recognized refugees who lived either in open accommodation facilities or in apartments in the center of Athens. The above project adopted three pedagogical approaches: 1. The pedagogy of literacy 2. The pedagogy of intercultural awareness 3. The pedagogy of place-based education
