Tools to foster empathy and understanding integration among children

In the fall of 2019, IMMERSE has embarked on a significant awareness campaign, from October 21st to November 20th. This campaign coincided with Universal Children’s Rights Day on November 20th, an annual day that commemorates the adoption of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which had reached its 30th anniversary this year. The aim of the campaign was to inform people about the experiences of refugee and migrant children. We also wanted to tell people about the MMERSE project.

We wanted to tell policy makers, teachers and children about how important education is for for migrant and refugee children and helping them feel that they belong. This was our message:

The right to education, a tool for real and long-term integration of migrant and refugee children in Europe.

We used ourTwitter account, @IMMERSE_H2020, to get our message out:

To raise awareness among children about the rights of migrant and refugee children, we made educational materials available on our project website. These resources were intended for use by schools, NGOs, and other interested parties. By giving children and young people the knowledge, we aimed to foster empathy and understanding of the importance of integration.

  • A printable postcard so schools, NGOs and associations can print and distribute. The design was translated into the 6 languages of the project.

This campaign was supplemented by a series of short interviews with various stakeholders in the integration process, providing insights and perspectives on this pressing issue.
